What the #@$& am I Looking At??

After a busy, busy week around the house, we really need to drop some updates!

Firstly, the first book in the Parliament of Twilight series is back in the top 20 for LGBT Horror.

ep 1 top 20 lgbt horror - 1-19-18

And that’s super, duper exciting after our feature on Queer Sci Fi earlier this week.

In addition to that (and only sort of related to our books but still awesome), Nevi has been working with a new art technique and it’s turned out some amazing results. You can see the first of them on her Deviant Art page.

For those of you who are hoping that we’ll drop some more things for you to spend money on, there is our Patreon page. We’re working on some exclusive content that will (fingers crossed) drop around the end of February and you’ll be the first in the know about our upcoming releases, get sneak peeks at the new covers as they are designed, and exclusive looks between the covers of the Parliament of Twilight books. Also, free eBooks of all our new releases for anyone who donates $5 or more per month.

And I thought there’d be more to talk about, but editing is pretty boring. It’s mostly me staring at words and praying they make sense outside of my head.

Please Pardon Our Dust

After a very long year of emotional and dramatic events (not the least of which was our roommate’s Myke’s near death experience), I have begun to really dig into our publishing business. The first step is going to be an overhaul of our website, which has already begun and will continue over the next couple weeks as I sort out what’s what. Please have patience as pages appear and disappear, links might be broken, and I could be weeping in the corner.

Just leave a bit of chocolate and walk away slowly. I’m sure I’ll be fine. Probably.

We are deeply entrenched in the final editing stages for the next Parliament of Twilight book. Actually, there are 3 coming down the pipes in the next 9 to 10 months. Episode 4 is about to visit with its new editor, so that’s not long in the future. Five is in the early stages of editing, and we’re nearly done with the almost final draft of 6. Now that we’re not bogged down by depression, drama, illness (by the way, Nevi is back on her feet after a month of pure hell sickness), and other distracting shenanigans, we have hours more every day that we can devote to our work that were lost.

We are hoping to have a Patreon account up and running by the end of the month, because as independent authors, we could always use a little boost in the wallet. And as readers, you could always use a little exclusive content.

As we move forward, there are projects other than the Parliament of Twilight we are hoping to be able to share. Nevi and I have both started (and even almost nearly finished) solo projects. There is a space opera trilogy we’ve been working on together. There are a few stand alone projects we are keeping on the back burner (maybe to be brought out during NaNoWriMo to give us a break from the high intensity Parliament drama.) In other words, we expect to be kept busy with lots and lots of writing stuff for the foreseeable future.

Keep your eyes on the blog for announcements, maybe a few excerpts from upcoming releases, and some randomness from Nevi and I when we can sneak away from the sweatshop of words that our living room has become!

The Questions that Matter, #1: Why did you do it?

So, we had a release party on Facebook for our newest release, The Parliament of Twilight Episode 2 and it was lots of fun!  We didn’t have many attendees (only 10 brave souls, if I’m being honest) but that was probably because I just decided on Saturday to host an event on Tuesday.  I’d read a marketing article that said events were a great way to reach people with the new Facebook page algorithms making everything all wonky.  So, I thought, why not give it a try?

Anyone who is interested can still go and answer the two poll questions that I’ve posted to gather a bit of info about what to do for the next one.  Remember, Episode 3 will be here before we know it!

One of the things we did at the party was answer questions from readers.  That was so much fun for me!  I loved doing it when we did our blog tour back in 2013 (while we were still baby authors!) and it was just as awesome as I hoped talking to people and answering questions about our process and characters.  I’ve decided that I will post the answers as a series of blog entries over the next week or two.

So, away we go with the first and probably the most revealing question.  (note: this is copied verbatim from the Facebook page.)

We got a doozy of a question in from Lee this morning! This is going to take a while to answer, so I hope everyone hangs around for the whole thing!

Here’s her question:
I’ve read your first three books, and was wondering, when did you realize you wanted to write something more episodic? Also, how do you keep your narrative smoothed out so that the story doesn’t just seem like a series of events, but something more cohesive?

WOW. Okay, let’s start with the easy part! Keeping the narrative cohesive. NOTES, lots and lots of notes. We make outlines of the original stories and then we make outlines of the pieces that should have been in between the scenes in those stories. Then we plot out how much we want to include in an Episode. Then we double check that plot. And once the draft is done, we triple check to make sure that we’re still following the timeline.

But as to when and how we realized we needed to change the format of the books? That was something we had to realize over time. The three Tales from the Parliament books were originally written as the first books of their own series. They are set in the same world, but focused primarily on three couples and were in different points of time. We had Ghost House happening first with Jacob & Brodie. Monster next with Julian and Siris and Inertia starting up third with Skye & RT.

What started to happen, because all three stories were part of the same world, was that some of the minor characters began to move between the different stories. And then there were connections between the main characters (Skye is technically the villain at the start of Monster and one of the heroes of Inertia!) It was all getting way too hard to keep the timelines of these secondary characters intact (especially ones like Richard who are alive and well in one and not doing so great in another or the Wolf twins who appeared in Inertia after the planned events of Ghost House 2 & 3 without a proper explanation of what happened to them.)

This was making us completely crazy, but we were writing M/M erotic romances, so we had to put up with it and keep the stories focused on the main couples, right?

But in the process of releasing the second books of Ghost House and Monster, we had a major breakdown/breakthrough with the writing. There was a massive spoiler for Ghost House in the Monster story line. I mean HUGE. Which in the course of the time line, the characters in Monster would know this thing but the readers would be spoiled for a major plot point of Ghost House. What were we going to do?

Well, first we cried. A lot. And swore a bit. Threw things. Then we got our shit together and brainstormed for hours.

What we finally admitted was that we weren’t happy writing in the romance genre. There were too many rules and guidelines (most unwritten, to be honest, but people expect certain things when you call your book a romance of any variety.) We were in love with too many of our characters and wanted to tell all of their stories. And, most important of all, the dark, horrific, amazing world we were building had its own story that loomed over that of the characters. The only way to do justice to the story living inside of us was to change what we were doing.

The final decision was that we would “rebrand” from Wandering Stars Press to Hermit & Star Books, take down the second books, and start from the logical beginning of the Parliament of Twilight story. It’s honestly the best choice that I’ve ever made in regards to my writing. I’m having so much fun telling the pieces that I thought would be forgotten or ignored. I’m enjoying exploring pieces of our world that were going to be left in darkness. And I’m loving being able to let all the characters have a place in the spotlight.

So, yeah.  That was quite a question to answer!  But there it is.  Do you have questions for the authors as well?  You can message me, Dani Hermit, through our Facebook page or via email at hermitstarbooks@outlook.com with the subject “The Questions that Matter submission” and I will post the answers to our blog!

Is it Still November? NaNoWriMo: Day 14

Working on a complete rewrite of the final scene of the Parliament of Twilight: Ep 2. It was pitifully short and left out WAY too much information that is relevant to the plot. It’s a scene most everyone has seen before, being one from Ghost House, but that’s what makes the rewriting it so important. It’s the vital cliffhanger moment at the end of the Episode. It can’t be weak. It just can’t.

In NaNo news, I haven’t touched In a Different Light in 3 days now. I’m pitifully behind, but once I’ve finished this POT: EP2 scene, I’m going to have loads more time on my hands to catch up and finish by the end of the month.

Other than being an insane person about how much writing I’m getting done on a daily basis, life is finally quieting down.  But I think that’s because it’s winter now and the whole world seems to slow down when it gets cold.  I know I always seem to.  But this winter, I won’t be hibernating with a pile of books and gallons of cocoa.  I’m going to be keeping up the schedule I’ve set for myself during NaNo.  Three hours minimum daily for writing tasks.  At least one hour a day for reading (because if I don’t take in words, how on earth am I going to churn them out?)  And the usual couple hours of watching anime or TV with Nevi and cooking foods for my Crew.

Still NaNo-ing, Day 8

It’s 8 days into NaNoWriMo, also known as November, the month between Halloween and Christmas, and (my personal favorite) “what the fuck is wrong with me? Why am I doing this to myself AGAIN?”

But eight days in and I haven’t quit.  I’ve got a bit on the NaNo Rebel side, and added a short story of approximately 4K words to my count, but it was completely written within the last 3 days, so it counts as new words.  Today, I’m caught up to my word count goal for NaNo, but a hair behind what I wanted my personal goal to be.  But that’s OK.  I have several days this week where I know for a fact I’ll have 6 to 8 hours of work time.  And more where it’ll be around 4 hours.  That’s the advantage of being a full time writer, I suppose.

How is everyone else doing on their NaNo?  I have a few friends who are doing it for the first time this year, and they are rocking it out!  I’m eager to share our projects at the end of the month.  That is, if they’re not too shy!

In other news, in addition to working on NaNo and our secret short story project, I’ve also been maintaining edits on the Parliament of Twilight: Episode 2.  It’s looking to be done before the end of the month.  Then it’s just sending it on the rounds of beta reading, editing, re-betaing, editing one more time, and the final read-through before it gets formatted and published.  Fingers crossed that it will be out for Christmas, but at least the pre-order will be up by then with the Episode itself being out just after the first of the year.

Soon, we will be doing a cover reveal.  Not sure of the date, but watch our Facebook page for details!

NaNoWriMo Day 4

Well, Day 3 left me with nothing to report, but a frustratingly long night of dealing with crappy customer service.  But that was yesterday and this is today.

I’ve kept up my NaNo numbers.  Not much ahead of the game at the moment, but I’m hoping that I can fix that in the next couple of days.  We have a long block planned for tomorrow that we’re calling our “NaNo PartyTime!”  There will be 4 to 6 hours of crazy writing and everyone’s going to get fucked up on fresh brewed tea and Asian chicken with rice!  It’ll be a wild time.

And, just to keep the crazy turned up to 11, Nevi and I decided that we needed to write a short story in the middle of NaNo!  It’s nearly done now. We’re on the last few paragraphs of the rough draft and then tomorrow, during our crazy party time, I’m going to do the first typing and rough edits.

We’ll see what comes of that.  Stay tuned for details!

NaNo Day 2

After ending day 1 with a pretty solid start and a plan that I think that I like for the rest of the month, I’m feeling pretty confident about this NaNo.  I’m proud to report that I’ve drafted two of my real life friends to the NaNo cult!  And one of them beat me out with our day one word count!  I’m feeling a bit competitive now and am going to have to end day 2 with a higher count than her. (You know who you are!)

But seriously, this is actually really cool.  I’ve been enjoying NaNo for a while and I hope that they have fun too.  And I might FINALLY get those stories out of them that they’ve been hiding for years now!

Other than NaNo, not much else to report.  Oh, we’ve been filling up our Etsy store and the Storenvy shop isn’t far behind.  We have copies of our illustrated Paperback edition of the Parliament of Twilight: Episode 1, and loads of art prints by Nevi in poster size (13 x 19), regular size (8 x 11) and postcards (4 x 6).  There are original characters from the POT series and some stunning fanarts, like these awesome Halloween pics of Ciel and Sebastian from Black Butler (Kuroshitsuji).
